Ice Breakers Secure Second Win with Modest, Team-Oriented Effort

Conception Bay South – January 27, 2025

The Eastern Ice Breakers delivered a quiet but decisive performance tonight, defeating Team Drover 5-1 at Robert French Memorial Arena. The victory marks the team’s second consecutive win in the WJAHL, building on the momentum of last week’s thrilling shootout triumph against Team Butler.

While the scoreboard showed a comfortable margin, the game was far from a walk in the park. Team Drover came out firing, putting up 39 shots on goal, but Ice Breakers’ netminder Maggie Byer was up to the challenge, earning first star honors with a stellar 38-save performance. Byer’s poise between the pipes kept Team Drover at bay, allowing just a single goal and giving her teammates the confidence to focus on their game plan.

“I was just trying to stay focused and track the puck,” Byer said post-game. “The defense did a great job clearing rebounds and letting me see the shots. It was a real team effort.”

The Ice Breakers’ offense, while not flashy, was efficient and opportunistic. Five different players found the back of the net, showcasing the team’s depth and balanced attack.

“We stuck to the fundamentals tonight,” said Captain Claire Crocker. “We knew Team Drover was going to push hard, but we stayed patient, played our game, and worked together. It’s great to see contributions from everyone on the roster.”

The Breakers struck first in the opening period, setting the tone early, and never looked back. Strong defensive play and a relentless forecheck limited Team Drover’s chances to mount a comeback, and the Ice Breakers’ fans responded with spirited support from the stands.

Despite the convincing win, the team remains grounded and focused on continuous improvement. “It’s great to get another win under our belt, but we know there’s still work to do,” said one of the assistant captains. “We’ve got to keep this momentum going and build on what’s been working for us.”

The Ice Breakers’ next challenge comes February 5th,  the team will look to bring the same disciplined, team-first approach that has earned them back-to-back victories.

For now, though, the Ice Breakers can enjoy a well-earned win, knowing they’re starting to hit their stride in the season.

Go Breakers!
